HISTORY

 

This program was established in 1996 after families and service providers advocated with the lawmakers enactment of P.L. 22-1 to provide for respite services for caregivers of persons with disabilities.

Total client served:  131 active and 57 on-call clients (4 hours a week).

Respite Care Services Program was established on 1996 through a contract with DISID to provide respite care services to caretaker family members at home.  To be eligible, the disabled person must be under 59 years of age who are chronically or terminally ill, as well as those who are physically or mentally challenged. This program is available for family members who are caring for individuals with chronic disability or terminal illness at home.  The trained staff takes over the non-medical care of the person with disabilities. Services include bathing, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, escorting and supervising consumers during recreation and other outings.
