At the beginning of FY’ 2003, the In Home Services and Homemaker Services merged into one program as the In Home Services Program.  The Homemakers under the “With Caretaker” category provided respite services to family members who care for the sick and frail elderly 60 years and older. They also provided support services in Personal Care, Homemaking and Chore Services. These same services were also provided under the “Without Caretaker” category exclusively of respite services. An average of 12-16 service hours monthly or 156 to 192 service hours annually were provided under each category.

The Telephone Reassurance Service (TRS) was implemented in April 2003. A total of 11 volunteers were recruited, and 15 subscribers (clients) were selected under the “Without Caretaker” category. Telephone Reassurance (TRS) is a daily check-in call from a volunteer to isolated Senior or disabled person. The call is placed at an arranged time each day. If the subscriber does not answer the phone, a procedure is in the place for the volunteer to follow up before the emergency response system is activated. At the end of the year, 11 volunteers reported 456 telephone calls to about 20 subscribers.

This program had positive effects since its implementation. Volunteers developed close relationship with the subscribers     and made more calls than required. Some provided transportation to church and even took subscribers for lunch. Our Elderly were pleased with this additional service in addition to the other support services being provided by our Homemakers.
