HISTORY The Father David I.A. Quitugua Foundation was established in 1986 initially in response to the
plight of a young couple whose son was afflicted by cancer and who was in
need of treatment off-island for his condition. The young couple was living from paycheck to paycheck to meet
their bills and other family needs and were financially not prepared to pay
for the medical expenses and off-island living expenses that are required to
treat their son. Fr. David I.A. Quitugua, who was then the Director of
Catholic Social Service, saw the need to assist this family and other
families in the same predicament. To address this need, he approached several
members of the community to help establish the program and to serve as board
members of the foundation. The board adopted the name and also decided that the
fundraisers coincide with Quitugua’s birthday celebrations in which all
proceeds went to the foundation’s cause. STATISTICS Number

An emergency medical crisis may come
into a family’s life unexpectedly and at a time when the family may be ill
prepared financially to take their families to seek medical assistance
off-island. The Father David I.A.
Quitugua Foundation was established in 1986 to assist the families and
individuals in this situation who are experiencing financial crisis due to
the severe illness of a family member.
Assistance is given to help defray part
of living expenses when the patient must go off-island for an emergency
medical care not available on island.
A doctor’s referral is needed for assistance for off-island expenses. The program has since assisted individuals
in purchasing medications due to non-coverage or when a pharmacy does not
accept Medicaid or MIP program recipients.
Prescriptions are needed when applying for assistance. Funding amount is limited and depend on
availability of donations. Considering the need in the community,
this program is under funded as it relies on monetary donations from
benefactors in the community.
