HISTORY

 

Established on March 1991 through a contract with DPH&SS, DSC, the Emergency Receiving Home (aka Guma Sagrada) addressed the growing problem of abuse for both the elderly and adult persons with disabilities.

 

 

STATISTICS

 

Total client served:  No more than eight (8) at any given time.

 

There were 43 substantiated abuse for fiscal year 2003 with the majority being that of neglect.  The following is the break down:

The Emergency Receiving Home provides temporary shelter to elderly sixty (60) years of age or older and adults with disabilities age eighteen (18) years or older who are victims of abuse and have been determined to be in immediate danger requiring protective shelter.  The shelter provides personal care (when necessary) and nutritious hot meals three (3) times a day and snacks two (2) times a day.  Social Workers develop individualized care plan (ICP) to each client admitted.  The total capacity for the shelter is no more than eight (8) clients at any given time.  A part-time registered nurse is available in the morning and evenings daily.

 

The Adult Protective Services Unit receives and conducts investigations twenty-four hours, seven (7) days a week on all referrals received through the Crisis Hotline.  APS provide services to elderly sixty (60) years of age or older and adults eighteen (18) years of age or older, who have a disability and who have been allegedly abused.  Immediate intervention and determination are made by the Social Workers to facilitate what emergency action is needed.  Intervention strategies used by APS Social Worker include crisis intervention, protective emergency shelter, multi-disciplinary meetings, individual and family meetings, education, networking with private and public social services and also working with the Office of the Public Guardian for clients who are not able to make informed consent.
